QuickTime TV
QuickTime is going PrimeTime. Plenty, plenty new news from the
Apple orchard this week as the Macworld Expo proved to be a
orgy of new announcements and product launches for the Mac
community.
Never to miss out on a press opportunity, Chris Evans' Virgin
Radio has become the first UK commercial radio station to join
Apple's network, which interim CEO Steve Jobs
announced his keynote speech on Wednesday.
The station started broadcasting Thursday over the Internet
using Apple's QuickTime TV technology. Virgin Radio joins Disney,
ABC, Rolling Stone and others, in the QuickTime TV (QTV) network,
which uses QuickTime streaming technology for Web-based video
and audio. Virgin Radio's new streaming channel is produced by
Ginger Online. According to the company's managing editor and
Ninfomania subscriber, Mike Hales, it chose QuickTime Streaming
for Virgin Radio because of its ability to stream high-quality audio.
The QuickTime file format also allows the station to use audio
and video assets from across the Ginger Media Group. There will
be two streams available, a 28.8- and a 56-Kbps version. Watch out
RealMedia, QuickTime hath cometh.
