Pioneer Exclusive - MP3 DJ Deck
It is not all fun and games here at Ninfomania, sometime we
do have to do some work and last Thursday was no exception.
We were invited to "think tank" at Pioneer on the future of their
DJ tools. It was, in a nutshell, very interesting ... but, in a
nutshell, something we can't really tell you too much about.
Even though they didn't get us to sign NDA's, we wouldn't want
to blow our cover with the full blue prints of their new product
range. What we can share with you is that they are thinking *very*
much along the MP3 lines. An interesting development considering
their CDJ-500 is the worlds best selling CD player for DJs.
Their two Japanese R&D "rouges" took great delight in showing
off some concept rich software based mixing tools that worked
in the air conditioned calm of Pioneers conference room, but
wouldn't in a hot, sweaty, boom box of a night club. The combined
panel of some "big name" DJs and cool kids, however, got very
interested in something called the PDJ-500S, which in essence is
exactly the same as the CDJ-500 [rugged, well thought out,
reliable], but instead of playing CD's, you hook it up to your
computer and transfer your "set" of MP3's to its hard drive.
Just think, no more lugging of record bags across the country ...
all you need is a few meg of MP3's and backup Jaz of all those
"club classics". One nice idea that emerged was to put on a serial
interface for your mobile phone, so you could download the latest
remix "hot" from the studio seamlessly into the mix.
