Optical Obstacle Course
Those three fast-food fellows of filmic flavours at the
Film and Video Umbrella have teamed with FirstSite
and John Hansard Gallery to launch an "Obstacle Course
and other works" by John Wood and Paul Harrison
Not to put the kids playpark at your local McDonalds
out of business, we are assured that: "the Obstacle Course
and other works is a touring exhibition of new installation
pieces by this collaborative duo of video artists, known
for visually surprising experiments in which they test
themselves out in relation to constructed physical
elements. The videos that document these playful actions
have a simple composition and formal elegance." Sorry,
would you like fries with that?
The fantastically sounding "Plinth", and "Circular Walk",
are additional attractions to the exhibition as well as a
number of specially-built structures, reminiscent of 70's
minimal sculpture. You will hear the sound of someone
clambering over, through or under these objects
continuously throughout the gallery ... but they kept all
the good words till last: "Distinguished by an unerring
sense of timing and a droll economy of effort, these
witty and inventive pieces combine a playful capacity
for surprise with a deceptive formal elegance." We'll
definitely Eat-In for this one.
Obstacle Course and other works is on tour from June
19 - Jan 15, 2000 at various "drive-through" locations
around the country. Check the web site for full details.
